What is a geo in affiliate marketing?

Geo is a term in affiliate marketing that specifies an area, in most cases a country. Sometimes, for a region that includes several geos there appears an abbreviation like LatAm (Latin America), MENA (Middle East and North Africa), DACH (first letters of Germany, Austria and Switzerland in german), CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States), etc.

It is common that geos in affiliate marketing might occur shortened via ISO code to a two- or three-letter form like DEU (Germany), BRA (Brazil), IDN (Indonesia), JPN (Japan), FR (France), AE (United Arab Emirates), GB (Great Britain), etc. Some services and platforms might display such ISO-coded names for countries, but over time they will become more and more recognizable at a glance.

What are Tiers for geos

Tier a form of classification for geos in affiliate marketing, by which any country might be attached to one of the Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 and Tier 4 categories. The main criterias are: the average amounts of CPA payouts, target audience penetration and solvency along with the complexity of effectively approaching the users. Tier recognition partly aligns with grouping countries by economic parameters into developed, developing and underdeveloped, while also appealing to affiliate marketing specifics.

The Tier 1 region includes the most wealthy countries with high solvency target audiences of North America, Europe and Oceania. While the Tier 2 group mostly consists of East Europe, CIS, South America (LatAm), partly Middle East (UAE) and Asia (Japan, South Korea). The rest goes to the Tier 3 geos as with Asia, Africa, partly South America and Oceania. Additionally, there’s a Tier 4 group that might include countries of no interest to affiliate marketing specialists due to no traffic, lack of products or service and advertising channels there.

Tiers might also indicate particular qualities of certain geos and regions in terms of advertising products in affiliate marketing. For instance, iGaming audiences in lower Tier countries gamble as a way to make fast money, while higher Tiers audiences access gambling as a form of entertainment. As a plus, a Tier might indicate relative changes in estimated budgeting for advertising, effective funnels and overall susceptibility of the target audiences there.
